While many local sports bettors were backing local boys Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen to triumph in the Nedbank Golf Challenge, German outsider Martin Kaymer triumphed and wrapped a pretty miserable weekend for local sports punters.
If you bought this weeks edition of Finweek, you would know that by Wednesday Oosthuizen made up 22% of the Voltbet.com betting, followed by Schwartzel on 16%. Kaymer enjoyed 12% of the book.
It was not just in the golf where results did not go according to plan according to Voltbet:
- 66% of their book backed Chelsea to win (The “Blues” lost 3-1 to West Ham)
- 75% backed Arsenal to win (They lost 2-0 to Swansea)
- 88% had money on Manchester City winning (1-1 draw with Everton)
Throw in New Zealand’s shock loss to England in the rugby and Sundowns being beaten by Bloemfontein Celtic and you have a pretty awful weekend if you were following the favourites.

i hope ma bet wil b worth it 4 todays sowe2 derby. I put a lot of csh on ma ma team pirates
Chelsea and Arsenal have been absolutely awful this season. Man City also need to become a bit more clinical if they are serious about winning silverware this season
