What did South Africans Google the most in 2012?

Need to know where Chattanooga is? Or the capital of Kazakhstan? Just Google it.

Understandably, it is hard to think of a more useful investigative tool than the monolithic Internet search engine. And because of its widespread use, Google searches can also give us valuable insight into what catches people’s attention – and what they are most curious about. Today, Google unveiled SA’s top searches in 2012 in its annual Zeitgeist, which may or may not surprise you.

Based on the results, it appears that South Africans have a bent for spring-cleaning, superstorms and superstars. The winner for overall trending in local searches was the free classifieds site, OLX  - proving that online buying and selling has become a popular means to get rid of unwanted stuff.

Diva Whitney Houston (who passed away in February) came in second, and Hurricane Sandy came in third. Whitney took the number one spot on the list of overall trending people in SA, followed by Caster Semenya and the notorious ‘social celebrity’, Khanyi Mbau. Unsurprisingly, the Gangnam style dance slotted in at number four in the overall trending searches. In fifth place was the 2012 Olympics, which also topped the trending events list. The other top searches were airline Velvet Sky, our beloved Olympic medalist Chad le Clos, queries on asking ‘how to kiss’ and ‘what is love?;  how to crochet’ and ‘how to knit’…

Strange, but true.
